It could also be a compatibility issue between the discs and your player. Try another brand, such as Verbatim, and see if the problems persist.... is LPCM the same as PCM, for audio? - PCM is mono for one stream, stereo for two and so on. As I said, it is uncompressed.
Digital camera chips mostly produce simple PCM often just 8 bit mono.

Even if the likelihood of the base OS being infected is low, a good anti-virus product will check for virii that could infect other OSes. In a network environment you don't want windows virii or malware getting in by piggy-backing on a Mac or Linux box.
