  1. when u hear a mk vi u can identify it with your eyes closed. this ref
doesn`t have as much high frequences as this mk vi does.

  2. I love the reference 54! Got one myself and out all the saxes I have play
    this is definitely my favourite!

  3. Man, they both sound pretty awesome. Just curious.. Is that a Rovner
ligature your using? What do you think of the O’Leg? I personally play on
a Otto Link with an O’Leg ligature and really love the sound on my alto.
Maybe i’ll up load something of me playing and you can tell me what you
    think? Maybe.lol

  4. i sold my Reference ….i got an 1958 Selmer Mark 6 from Tenor Madness and
belive me Reference can t even be in the same league !! but ok i paid over
12000 § for it. if you have the cash don t even consider Reference a
candidat … is maybe a copy of some bad Mark 6 after my experience!!

  5. Hey there,

I find the Reference to have a … “smoother” sound. More suited to a
wedding setting or something of the sort, where one needs a soft and
    beautiful sound.
The Mark VI, however, has a much more bright tone. It is suited for loud,
    aggressive jazz playing.
    I personally prefer the Reference.

  6. I prefer the former (MK VI) ; MK VI has a very open and uninhibitied,
sparkling kind of sound; the reference sounds somewhat stuffier and
slightly annoying. I vote for MK VI

  7. Having played the reference 36/54 side by side then playing a mk vi, the
modern rendition of their flagship horns are a poor representation in my
opinion. The reference series is stuffy around middle D and has very
little character, however, the mk vi is lively and free blowing throughout
the whole range. Recently the Conn-Selmer rep came to my local music shop
with their horns, the conn-selmer demo ref. 54 was much better than the
others in the shop, and had the same key height/setup. I brought it to the
attention of the Rep. He was rather offended that I claimed the demo he
brought was different than the in store models. After 4-5 tests it was
abvious that they had a hand picked reference 54. Needless to say they were
still stuffy and had intonation problems, I currently own two buescher
400’s and a cannonball stone that are all played regularly. The modern
selmer horns just seem to have missed the mark…
