Misdiagnosing Narcissism — Asperger’s Disorder

(The use of gender pronouns in this article displays the clinical facts: the majority of narcissists and most Asperger’s individuals are male. )

Asperger’s Disorder is often misdiagnosed because Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), though evident as early as age group 3 (while pathological narcissism cannot be safely diagnosed prior to earlier adolescence).

In both cases, the patient is self-centered and immersed in a narrow range of passions and activities. Social plus occupational interactions are seriously hampered and conversational abilities (the give and get of verbal intercourse) are usually primitive. The Asperger’s individual body language – eye in order to eye gaze, body position, facial expressions – will be constricted and artificial, akin to the narcissist’s. Nonverbal tips are virtually absent and their interpretation in others missing.

Yet, the gulf among Asperger’s and pathological narcissism will be vast.

The narcissist changes between social agility plus social impairment voluntarily. their social dysfunctioning is the outcome of conscious haughtiness and the unwillingness to invest scarce mental power in cultivating relationships along with inferior and unworthy other people. When confronted with potential Sources of Narcissistic Supply, however, the particular narcissist easily regains their social skills, his elegance, and his gregariousness.

Many narcissists reach the highest rungs of their community, church, firm, or even voluntary organization. Most of the time, these people function flawlessly – though the inevitable blowups and the grating extortion of Narcissistic provide usually put an end to the narcissist’s career and social attache.

The Asperger’s patient frequently wants to be accepted socially, to have friends, to get married to, to be sexually active, and to sire offspring. He simply doesn’t have a clue how to go about it. His impact is limited. His initiative — for instance, to share his encounters with nearest and closest or to engage in foreplay — is thwarted. His ability to divulge his emotions stilted. He is incapable or reciprocating and is largely unaware of the particular wishes, needs, and emotions of his interlocutors or even counterparties.

Inevitably, Asperger’s individuals are perceived by other people to be cold, eccentric, insensitive, indifferent, repulsive, exploitative or even emotionally-absent. To avoid the pain associated with rejection, they confine on their own to solitary activities — but, unlike the schizoid, not by choice. these people limit their world to a single topic, hobby, or even person and dive in with the greatest, all-consuming intensity, not including all other matters and everyone otherwise. It is a form of hurt-control plus pain regulation.

Thus, while the narcissist avoids pain simply by excluding, devaluing, and getting rid of others – the Asperger’s patient achieves the same outcome by withdrawing and by strong incorporating in his universe only one or two people and one or two topics of interest. Both narcissists plus Asperger’s patients are prone to respond with depression to recognized slights and injuries — but Asperger’s patients are far more at risk of self-harm plus suicide.

The use of language is another differentiating factor.

The narcissist is a skilled communicator. this individual uses language as an device to obtain Narcissistic Supply or even as a weapon to destroy his “enemies” and thrown away sources with. Cerebral narcissists derive Narcissistic Supply from the consummate use they make of their innate verbosity.

Not so the particular Asperger’s patient. He is similarly verbose at times (and taciturn on other occasions) yet his topics are couple of and, thus, tediously repeated. He is unlikely to follow conversational rules and manners (for instance, to let other people speak in turn). Nor is the Asperger’s patient able to decipher nonverbal cues plus gestures or to monitor his own misbehavior on such events. Narcissists are similarly thoughtless – but only in the direction of those who cannot possibly serve as Sources of Narcissistic Supply.
