It’s really too bad your emphasis was “Cite your source” instead of the
real issue: ASK PERMISSION, especially if you are “taking from another
site”. You did not mention even once that Ancestry’s Terms & Conditions
REQUIRE their users to HAVE PERMISSION to use other people’s creations. It
seems that should have been included in a CYA video. Truly shameful.
I keep all my records private – meaning, they are NOT uploaded to my tree
online – I don’t attach anything other than the occasional obit and because
of the living aspect found in obits, I do not make those public either. I
do not allow people to view my private tree UNLESS I know there is a direct
family lineage. I have invited others in the past, only to find them taking
research that doesnt have anything to do with their lineage and than put it
out on the net – privacy is key to many.
Thanks for the great advice. Pity more people didn’t apply these principles
to their research.
